ADVERTISING-ITS MERITS AND DE-MERITS

Advertising plays a very important part in modern business and industry. That is why it is becoming more and more technical and scientific every day.Through advertisement we bring some new thing or idea to the notice of the public. It is an art that requires great skill, tact and wisdom. Tradesmen, job seekers, employers, manufacturers, contractors and workers, all advertise according to their need. Moreover, it is the most economical and attractive way of capturing the market.

Advertising is a matter of common sense. It is economical, not only for the seller but also for the buyer. But for advertisement we could never understand the rates of the articles of common use such as cloth, soap, cigarettes and many other things that we buy everyday. On the one hand advertising increases the sale of an article, and on the other, it helps the consumer to make his selection without additional expenses.

Some of the recognized ways of advertisement in this modern age is Internet, newspapers, magazines, show cards, price lists, catalogues, and display boards. Posters, films, loudspeakers, prize coupons, crossword puzzles and hand bills also have their effect. It is also quite common to advertise through radio and television. Even aero planes are used for this purpose. Thus, the three essentials of advertisement i.e., immediate appeal, novelty of approach and directness decide the effectiveness of publicity.

Advertisement has some abuses as well. Some dishonest businessmen cheat simple people through their advertisements. Sometimes quite worthless goods have a ready market only because of publicity. This sort of advertisement is very injurious. Therefore, it is the duty of the government and the people to check such advertisements and to punish the offenders.

SPACE TRAVEL

Space travel is one great wonder of our age. There was a time when man could not even think of landing on the moon. But the achievements of Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 have put the world to unbelievable surprise. After exploring the earth’s bosom and after deep into oceans man turned his hand to the planets. His beginnings were very humble. Starting from gliders and balloons, now he has successfully launched sputniks and rockets of the surface of the moon. It was a day of great achievement when on July 21, 1969, Neil A. Armstrong and Edwin E. Aldrin, the pilots of Apollo 12, set their foot, on the moon. No doubt they were in there space suits and walked on the surface of the moon only for a few minutes, but this showed that man had conquered space.

The race for the conquest of space started in 1957, when the Russians launched their first rocket, called the ‘Satellite’, into space. This satellite was fired into space by a three stage rocket engine which gave it a velocity of about 8000 meters a second. This satellite circled round the earth hundreds of times and ultimately exploded like a shooting star. The second sputnik which was a bit larger than the first carried a dog named Laika into space. This showed that it was quite possible to send living creatures into space. This satellite too got destroyed after entering the upper atmosphere. The third sputnik was launched on May 15, 1958. It was filled with solar batteries and radio transmitters. But this sputnik too meets the same fate and was soon destroyed.

Side by side with Russians, the Americans too made experiments in space travel. First, they launched small capsules into space. These were numbered as Apollo one, two, three etc... The tenth space explorer was piloted by Major Gordon Cooper. It circled round the earth 24 times and then landed safely. Then Apollo 11 achieved a greater success. It reached quite near the moon and took several photographs of its surface. Then Apollo 12 was set into space in July 1969. It had the three men on board. This rocket reached within a few miles distance from the moon and then the two men of the crew, Neil A. Armstrong and Edwin E. Aldrin, actually landed on the surface of the moon. They walked on the moon and picked up some stones which they brought back to the earth. The whole show was transmitted to the earth with the help of powerful cosmic cameras. This was a day of great rejoicings for humanity. Man had conquered space. The moon which had always been a topic of fairy tales had at last been surmounted. In this race the Americans have left the Russians behind. Thus the day is not far when the moon will become a pleasure spot for tourists from the earth.

AIR TRAVEL

The history of air travel is very brief but very interesting. Today when we see an aeroplane flying in the air we do not show any surprise, but about half a century ago no one could think of such a thing. Some men in ancient times made big wings and tried to fly in the air like birds but could not succeed. Some early inventors tried balloons and succeeded to a certain extent. But these flights were very small. It is only in modern times that the dream of flying in the air like birds has been realized. Today air travel is a reality and none can doubt it.

Clement Adler was the real pioneer of aeroplane flights. He built a real aeroplane with the funds given to him by the French Government. Then came the Wright Brothers. They fitted a motor into one of their machines and made four flights in 1903.
Soon the work of aeroplane construction was started in various countries. The Great War of 1914 gave it a great encouragement. Improved machines and trained pilots became a deciding factor in wars. Aeroplanes are used not only for dropping bombs but also for scouting and taking photographs of ammunition factories and military bases of the enemy. Now a days aviation is being developed in all parts of the world. The work of aerial photography, mail and passenger traffic, map-making, and throwing of artificial manure is also done with the help of aeroplanes. The distances between countries have become considerably small and the aeroplane is bringing world nations closer to one another.
Thus, the future of air aviation is very bright. In our age, trade and commerce have become so quick that old means of transport like merchant ships, goods trains and motor trucks, cannot keep pace with them. Therefore, people feel the need for a quicker method of transport. No doubt, is feared that aeroplanes will play a very horrible role in the wars of the future. Still there is every hope that man will make a better use of this remarkable invention. He may use it more to rush help to the distressed and to give airlift to the needy than to kill his fellow human beings. The invention of jets and supersonic aeroplanes equipped with wonderful radars, wireless sets and map making equipments, has opened a new chapter in the history of air travel. Let us hope for a better future.
